Well hadn't we a very productive English class this week?! Last week, I met a wonderfully charismatic American in Brussels and found myself deep in conversation! Turns out ye can't turn sideways in this world without running into someone who knows the Mighty Microsoft Man, Stephen Howell. As luck would have it, Derek was to spend the week travelling Ireland, promoting his book 'Scratch for Kids'. He was kind enough to stop in to St. Oliver's and teach us a thing or two about Scratch and storytelling. We really enjoyed our visit from our American friend and we look forward to seeing him for a cyber meet-up very soon ;)

We have been exploring different types of functional writing in class. Today, we are going to ontribute to a blog/forum. In the comments, tell me the best advice you have ever received!
We've been studying the artform that is Haikus. These are poems that are three lines long. The first line has five syllables, the second line has seven syllables and the third line has five syllables. They are usually about nature. In the comments section, please write your Haiku. I cannot WAIT to read them!
This week, we have been focusing on everything Irish in English! We really enjoyed watching this clip about Ireland by Failte Ireland. We answered some questions on it and for homework, we have to design a tourism advert for a billboard.

In class this week, we have been reading the poem 'But You Didn't' by Merrill Glass. The themes of the poem are love and war. We created comic strips to portray what happens in the poem.
We have been studying The Daffodils by William Wordsworth in class this week. This poem is filled with beautiful images of daffodils and reminds us of a warm, sunny day. With all the cold weather, this poem has really managed to cheer us up! We have been answering a lot of questions about the poem in class but we wanted to share our visual representations of the poem with you!

Since the mid term break, we have been filling up our scrap books with pictures and details of the book 'Skellig' by David Almond. We will post pictures of our scrap books when we're finished. There will be prizes for the best effort and creativity. In our scrap books, we will include:
1. The cover
2. A character list
3. Character sketches of Skellig, Mina, Michael, Mum and Dad
4. A diary entry
5. Pictures of owls and angels
6. A piece on William Blake
7. My favourite part
8. Key words
9. My favourite character
Every Tuesday and Wednesday we have a double class of English. That's a lot of Miss Cullen in two days! We have decided to dedicate our first class on Tuesday morning to 'personal reading'. We can bring in any books or comics that we would like to read to ourselves in class. Miss Cullen plays some music and we relax and let our imaginations run wild!

There has been some excellent homework this week! Well done to everyone who has made an extra special effort. We are reading the novel 'Skellig'. The students had to design the front page of the newspaper declaring that an angel had been found in a garage. They also had to write their diary entry the night after they discovered Skellig in the garage.
On Tuesday, we had a 'personal reading' class. Some students read 'Skellig' and some students read a book or magazine they had brought in from home. They wrote a review of the book/ magazine they had read.
We recently read the poem 'Tich Miller' by Wendy Cope. The sideshow below shows the students' visual representations of the poem.
